「Battlefield 3」のプレイに，Electronic Artsの新サービス「Origin」が必須であることが明らかに

　世界中のFPSファンが期待する「Battlefield 3」（PC/PlayStation 3/Xbox 360）だが，ゲームをプレイするためには，パブリッシャであるElectronic Artsが運営しているデジタル配信サービス「Origin」が必須であることが明らかになった。
　これは，EA DICEのグローバルコミュニティマネージャーを務めるダニエル・マトロス（Daniel Matros）氏がTwitter上でファンからの質問に答える形で明らかになったもの。「パッケージ版のDVDを持っていても，Originが必要になるというウワサがありますが？」という問いに対し，マトロス氏は「そのウワサは，本当です」と答えている。

　2011年6月にサービスが始まったばかりのOriginは，以前「EA Downloader」と呼ばれていたPC向けのデジタル配信システムを大幅に刷新したEAの新サービスであり，PCゲームのダウンロード販売だけでなく，PlayStation 3やXbox 360向けソフトのオンライン販売，コミュニティサポートなどのさまざまな機能が統合されている。
　2011年8月8日に掲載した記事でもお伝えしたように，Battlefield 3は「Star Wars: The Old Republic」と同様，Valveの「Steam」での販売が行われないことは発表されていたが，「Battlefield 3をプレイするのに，Originが必須」と公に発言されたのは初めてだ。

　PCの場合，ゲームをインストールしてOriginで認証されたのち，Originをアンインストールしてもプレイを続けられるのだが，Battlefield 3やStar Wars: The Old Republicなど，Originの存在価値を向上させる大作の場合，その方法が通用するのかどうかは不明だ。
　常駐型のOriginクライアントは，たとえわずかだとしてもPCのパワーを消費するため，この措置に反発するユーザーの声も上がっている。また，発売直後にアクセスが極端に集中すると思われるOriginのサーバーを不安視する意見もある。
　利点として，他社のサービスを利用する場合と違ってライセンス料が不要であるため，拡張パックやDLCの無料（あるいは廉価の）リリースといったサービスの拡充は期待できるだろう。

　シリーズ累計で約3000万本というセールスを誇るBattlefieldシリーズは，EA DICEの最新ゲームエンジン「Frostbite 2」が描く驚異のグラフィックスを武器に，2011年末の商戦でActivisionの「Call of Duty」シリーズに挑む。現時点では，PC版のαテストが行われており，開発もいよいよ大詰めを迎えているはずだ。
