Valve，発売10周年を記念して「Half-Life」をビックリ価格で提供

　Valveは，2008年11月19日が「Half-Life」発売10周年にあたるのを記念し，期間限定で98セントという驚きの低価格で同作品の販売を発表した。なお，この98セントという価格は，Steamでのダウンロード販売価格で，2008年11月21日12：01 PST（現地時間，日本では11月22日5：01）までの期間限定となっている。


　「Half-Life」は，1998年11月19日に北米で発売された，Valveの記念すべき第一弾タイトルだ。
　主人公のゴードン・フリーマンは，アメリカの秘密研究所において極秘の実験に携わっていたが，ある日実験の最中に異次元への扉が開いてしまう。我々の住む世界に侵入を開始したクリーチャー達，さらには，この事件を揉み消そうと政府が送りこんだ特殊部隊員達の両方と，たった一人で戦いを続けていくというFPSだ。id Softwareからライセンスを受け，Quakeエンジンをベースにしたチューンアップ版エンジンを用いて制作された。ちなみにこの時のエンジンをベースにして，Sourceエンジンが開発されている。

　高いストーリー性と，優れたゲームバランスがプレイヤーに絶賛され，さらにはプレイヤーによって改造が施された拡張ファイルのModという文化を開花させた作品だ。今なお高い人気を誇る「Counter-Strike」も，そもそもは，本作のModとして生を受けたものだ。
　つまり本作が存在していなかったら「Counter-Strike」も「Half-Life 2」もこの世に登場することもなく，Sourceエンジンも生まれなかったことになり，「Left 4 Dead」も存在していなかったわけだ。

　当時は美しかったグラフィックスも，今となってはさすがに古臭く見えてしまうのは否めないが，ゲーム史に残る名作を格安で手に入れて再認識するのも悪くない。販売期間が短いので，興味を持った人はすぐに購入しよう。
