［E3 2008＃26］指輪物語をBattlefront風アクションに！「The Lord of the Rings：Conquest」がプレイアブルで出展

　Electronic Artsのショーケースルームで，同社傘下のPandemic Studiosが開発する「The Lord of the Rings: Conquest」が公開されていた。展示されていたのはXbox 360版のみだったが，痛快なアクションは「Star Wars: Battlefront」そのままといった印象。それもそのはず，Battlefrontを作っていたのは，まだElectronic Artsに買収される前のPandemic Studiosなので，The Lord of the Rings: Conquestは「正真正銘のBattlefrontゲーム」といっても差し支えないわけである。
　本作は，映画「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」三部作の世界感をベースにしており，プレイヤーはモリアやヘルムズディープなど，さまざまなロケーションで大活劇が楽しめる。Good（フェローシップ）とEvil（サウロン軍）双方のキャンペーンが用意されており，Goodでは映画の冒頭で描かれた“最後の同盟戦争”から始まり，Evilではナスグルがフロドを殺して指輪焼却を阻止した（！）という架空の物語をベースに，その後の世界の制覇を狙う。


　Evil勢力でのストーリー展開が，J.J.R.トールキンの描く物語とは大きく異なる点が（主にトールキン財団による許諾の面で）心配だが，本作ではスティーブ・ジャクソン監督率いるWETA Digitalが，キャラクターモデルやテクスチャに関して制作協力しているほか，映画のサントラも利用されており，ゲームの雰囲気は非常に映画に近いものになっている。
　展示されていたデモでは，非常に激しいアクションや流血表現などが見られ，アクション自体は軽快ながらも，かなり大人向けのゲームだという印象を受けた。本作ではマルチプレイモードも存在し，ヒーローデスマッチやキャプチャー・ザ・フラッグ，コンクエストモードなど，「Star Wars Battlefront II」にあったゲームモードはすべてフィーチャーされているようだ。


　最大で16人までの対戦をサポートするとのことだが，PC版ではPandemic Studiosが専用サーバーを構築することになるだろうと，今回のデモを担当してくれたベン・リウ（Ben Liu）氏は語ってくれた。対応プラットフォームは，PCとXbox 360のほかにも，PLAY STATION 3やWiiが発表されており，2008年11月上旬にはリリースできるとのこと。
