2K Games，FPS＋RPGという異色作，「Borderlands」を10月23日にアジア地域で発売

　ゲームパブリッシャの2K Gamesは，テキサスのGearbox Softwareが制作する「Borderlands」（PC/PLAYSTATION 3/Xbox 360）を，アジア地域で2009年10月23日に発売すると発表した。価格については未定。


　Borderlandsは，地球を遠く離れた惑星Pandoraで，惑星に生息する凶暴な生物と戦いながら，一攫千金を狙うハンターとしてしたたかに生きる人類を描いたFPS。
　もっとも，シューティングがメインとはなるものの，最大4人のプレイヤーによるCo-op（協力プレイ）や，キャラクターカスタマイズ，経験値によるレベルアップなど，RPG的な要素を強く兼ね備えたFPS＋RPGという雰囲気のゲームだ。ほかのプレイヤーのシングルプレイに飛び込んでCo-opを楽しんだり，さまざまなビークルを自由に乗り回したりなど，普通のシューターにとどまらない魅力を持っている。


　Gearboxは，Brothers in Armsシリーズや「Halo: Combat Evolved」などのヒット作品を送り出しているデベロッパ。開発当初は「Unreal Engine 3」による，リアルでダークな雰囲気のグラフィックスを持ったゲームだったが，2009年4月にグラフィックスをカートゥーン風の明るいデザインへと大きく路線変更するという，博打ともいえるような大転換を敢行。スピーディなゲームプレイとよくマッチしたグラフィックスに変えて我々の前に姿を現したのも記憶に新しい。

　ゲームの公式サイトは「こちら」（要年齢認証）で，MediaコーナーにはElectronic Entertainment Expo 2009で公開されたプレイムービーのほか，多数のスクリーンショットが掲載されている。日本では今一つポピュラーとはいえないFPSだが，2K Gamesは本作に「Diablo」を思わせる武器の自動生成など，RPG的風味をたっぷり付けることでアジア地域でのアピールを狙っているようだ。
