id Software，モバイル，携帯ゲーム機市場に参入を表明

　コアなハードゲーマーに向けて先鋭的なFPSを送り出す独立独歩のデベロッパ，という印象が強いテキサスのid Softwareだが，どうやら時代の波には逆らえず，本格的にモバイル用ゲームの開発に乗り出すらしい。
　アメリカの日刊紙，USA Today（電子版）の報じるところによれば，id Softwareの設立者にしてテクニカルディレクター，そしてFPS界のカリスマプログラマーであるジョン・カーマック氏は，同社が新たに立ち上げたid Mobileにおいて，かつての名作タイトル，「Quake」や「Wolfenstein」などを携帯電話向けに作り直してリリースすると公式に語っている。
　これはまた大胆な転身に思えるが，そういえばid Softwareはここ数年，携帯電話や携帯ゲーム機向けのゲームを制作しており，昨年（2006年）初めには「DOOM RPG」を，また昨年（2006年）はNintendo DS向けのファンタジーRPG「Orcs & Elves」をElectronic Artsからリリースし，さすがというかなんというか，高い評価と販売本数のどちらも獲得しているのだ（記事によると，DOOM RPGのダウンロード本数は100万本以上）。打ち上げた観測気球がよい結果をもたらしたので，本格的な参入を決意したということなのだろう。
　ちなみに，Orcs & Elvesの制作はid SoftwareにFountainhead Entertainmentというデベロッパが協力しており，実はその創設者はカーマック氏の奥さんの，Katherine Anna Kang氏。さらに実は彼女，id Mobileの責任者も務めており，なんとなく家内制手工業のような雰囲気がなきにしもあらずだが，カーマック氏の本気度が伝わってくるようなこないような話である。いずれにせよ，次世代グラフィックスエンジン「id Tech 5」を使った新作「Rage」のことさえ忘れてくれなければ，モバイル版DOOMはとてもやってみたいなあ。
