“香港アクション”映画をモチーフにした「Sleeping Dogs」の最新ムービーが公開。開発者達から“香港マフィアへの取材”などの制作秘話が語られる

　　海外でSquare Enixが発売するクライムアクションゲーム「Sleeping Dogs」（PC / PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360）において，スタッフが開発秘話などを語る新たなムービーが公開された。ムービーは「本作のロケーションはなぜ香港が選ばれたのか」といった点について，開発者達がインゲームシーンを交えつつ説明するという内容だ。


　Sleeping Dogsは，香港警察の刑事Wei Shenが，香港を牛耳るマフィア「Sun On Yee」を内部から崩壊させるため，自らチンピラとなって潜入するというオープンワールド型のゲームだ。さまざまな乗り物を利用するだけでなく，生身で屋根から屋根へと移動するフリーラニング的な要素も備えた作品で，プレイヤーは，マフィアの一人として請け負った仕事と刑事本来の任務の両方を遂行していくことになる。


　今回リリースされたムービーに登場するのは，開発を手がけるUnited Front Gamesの開発者達。彼らが「東洋と西洋の建築が入り混じった香港」という独特のロケーションに魅せられ，映画としてはメジャーながらもあまりゲーム化されない香港アクションというジャンルを煮詰めようという，企画の裏話が公開されている。リサーチのために実際にマフィアのメンバーにコンタクトを取り，その実情をドライブしながら説明してもらうなど，のちに彼らのゲーム作りに生かされることになる経験談などを聞くことができる。

　本作は，2009年に「True Crime: Hong Kong」というタイトルでActivisionから制作が発表されていたが，その後二転三転しながら再スタートを切ったプロジェクトの作品。2012年5月には「Max Payne 3」（PC / PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360），2013年には「Grand Theft Auto V」と，オープンワールド型クライムアクションゲームの大作が控えているが，そんな中でもSleeping Dogsは，アジア風味の漂う独特の世界感で異彩を放つ作品として，期待したいところだ。
