［Gamescom］大気圏外から敵地に向かって落下するFPS「Section 8」とは？

　Gamescom会場のSouthpeak Gamesブースに展示されていた「Section 8」（PC/Xbox 360）は，「Kohan」シリーズでもお馴染みのTimeGate Studiosが開発中の，未来の宇宙をテーマにしたシューティングゲームである。ストーリーは，時空旅行の英知を発見した地球文明が宇宙の開拓に乗り出した，遠い未来の話。銀河の最果てにあった惑星からの連絡が途絶えたことから，その状況を確認すべく送られるのが，主人公となるAlex Cordeの属する特殊部隊「セクション8」となる。

　このセクション8とは，実際にアメリカ陸軍で利用されていたこともある軍隊用語で，精神的な理由などで除籍された兵士らのことを指すという。ゲームでは，大気摩擦にも耐え得る重装アーマーを身につけ，状況の分からない地域へと大気圏外から突入していく機動部隊に参加する兵士達のことを，そのクレイジーな活動からセクション8と呼んでいるというわけだ。


　会場でデモが行われていたのは，このSection 8のマルチプレイ版だ。ゲームでは，大気圏外からの突入を“バーン・イン”（burn-in）と呼んでいるが，40人までのプレイヤーをサポートする対戦モードにおいては，リスポーンするときにこのバーン・インが用いられる。一度死ぬと，画面には戦場を表すマップが表示され，自分の目指す地点を指定し，飛び降りていくという仕組みになっているのである。
　この仕様ならば，通常であればマップの後方など，離れた場所でリスポーンした後に戦場に向かうといった無駄を回避でき，逆に背後に回って敵の退路を断つというような戦術も生まれてくる。マップには敵味方の拠点やほかのプレイヤーの現在地も表示されるので，常に前線にプレイヤーが集まることになる。
　プレイヤーがバーン・インすると，序々に陸に近付いていく様子がシームレスに表示され，やがては砂埃を立ててひざまずいた状態で着地する。実際に，空から高速で落ちてくる様子がほかのプレイヤーからも確認できるのが，ちょっとカッコ良いのだ。

　Section 8は，UnrealEngine 3で制作されており，そのグラフィックスもなかなかのもの。Xbox 360，及びPC版でのリリースを9月1日に控えており，もう正式発売も秒読み段階だ。乗り物を使ったコンバットも用意されており，どこか「Call of Duty」や「Halo」の良い部分を抽出した感のあるSection 8だけに，リリースされればそれなりの評価を受けることになりそうだ。
